Jerusalem: Israel has broadened the scope of its military operation in Gaza, adding a new objective: the safe return of northern Israel residents displaced due to the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah along the Israel-Lebanon border.

This decision was made during an overnight meeting of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's office, the updated goals now include "the safe return of northern residents to their homes."

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, in a meeting with U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein on Monday, emphasized that diplomatic efforts to ease tensions with Hezbollah are nearing a dead end. Gallant warned that military action might be the only solution to restore calm along the northern border.

The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border. Hezbollah has stated that it would halt fire if Israel and Hamas reach a ceasefire agreement.
